Red Alert: Two Explosions Hit Moscow Metro
March 29, 2010 | 0542 GMT
There have been two explosions on Moscow metro systems March 29. The first explosion hit the second carriage of a metro train stopped at Lubyanka station and the second at Park Kultury station. Ten people were initially reported injured in the first blast with an unknown number injured in the second blast. With two blasts approximately 40 minutes apart in Moscow subway stations it is most likely it was coordinated terrorist attacks in Russia’s capital.
According to STRATFOR sources in Moscow, the two locations of the attacks on the subway in the city are symbolic. The first attack in Park Kultury is symbolic in that it is one of the city’s cultural centers being located near Gorky Park. The second location of the attack at the metro station of Lubyanka is nearly under the Federal Security Bureau’s headquarters—former KGB headquarters—the security hub of Russia. According to media reports, the attacks were caused by suicide bombers at the peak of rush hour in Moscow. Thus far, rumors are flying that Muslim extremists are responsible for the attack. In the past, there have typically been spring-summer attacks in Moscow in February, and spring is just now arriving in the capital.
Stratfor will be closely watching the situation for more details.

Suicide bombers were going to bomb FSB and MIA? CNN from itself lays responsibility for the bombings upon Chechens
Publication time: Today at 13:34 Emirate time
Russian authorities will inevitably lay responsibility for the bombings in Moscow metro upon the Chechens, some Western media outlets are assured.
"A Web site associated with Chechen separatists claimed responsibility for the attacks", CNN announces, without, however, giving link to the website.
"Immediately after the explosions, officials had cast suspicion on the separatists", CNN reports.
"Suspicion could fall on the groups from North Caucasus where Moscow is fighting a growing Islamist insurgency", Reuters notes.
Female suicide bombers were planning to hit the Lubyanka station, where the main building of the FSB is located, and the October, where the building of the central office of "Interior Ministry of Russia" is located, a source in the management of the Moscow metro said.
"Thus, the militants wanted to send greetings to the special services".
Meanwhile, Russian authorities said about finding a head, "supposedly of suicide bomber", of young woman separated from the body, at the Park Kultura station.
Body parts of older women were also found at the Lubyanka station. Probably, she has also blown up herself, but there is not yet confirmation from official sources of Russia on subject.
"Female suicide bombers, most likely had never been earlier in the subway, so they can not oriented themselves, they were only given names of the stations, where they must conduct blasts. Some inconsistency in the sequence of explosions is related to this", Interfax agency quotes representative of the FSB.
It is assumed that the two female suicide bombers boarded the subway on Monday morning at South West station. They followed the train on the red branch of the Moscow metro.
The blasts took place at the stations of Lubyanka and Park Kultury with a half-an-hour difference.
Meanwhile, Russian blogs citing eyewitnesses reported a great jam at Komsomolskaya station because of the morning's explosions in the Moscow metro.
"They say there are victims who are simply run over in the crowd. People crowded into the lobbies, there were many thousands of people. Despite this the turnstiles at the entrance was not blocked. Passengers arriving at the Leningrad station EMUs were going on by a familiar route and caught in the jam. All exits at the three stations, except one, from the lobby area were closed", Russian blogger ivashkov-Spb wrote.
