Soros în spatele "Wikileaks" ?

Pe siteul Cryptome a apărut un articol care ridică ipoteza că Wikileaks ar beneficia de susţinere din partea unor organizaţii care sunt ale controversatului multimiliardar George Soros, cum ar fi  Open Society Institute  (articolul are titlul "George Soros Open Source Institute Inquiry on Wikileaks").

I've been following coverage of Wikileaks' release of the Afghan Diaries closely, and have admired your skepticism. I feel firmly we are on the same page. However, I would like to make an attempt to clear some possible disinformation that is floating about. While it's obvious that the "diaries" are a mix of propaganda and publicly available information, I do suspect the entire operation is funded from a controlling interest.

Thank you for taking the time to read this far, and allow me to voice my concern. Many are running with the claim that Wikileaks was funded by The Open Society Institute. (Soros connection). I, myself, suspected the same, after Declan's CNET interview with you...

"Operating a Web site to post leaked documents isn't very expensive (Young estimates he spends a little over $100 a month for Cryptome's server space). So when other Wikileaks founders started to talk about the need to raise $5 million and complained that an initial round of publicity had affected "our delicate negotiations with the Open Society Institute and other funding bodies," Young says, he resigned from the effort."

However, judging by that article, it's just not clear to me, whether or not Open Society Institute, in fact, provided funding for Wikileaks.

Este vorba despre interviul dat de americanul John Young (unul din deţinătorii siteului Cryptome) pentru CNET News. Young, un arhitect de 74 de ani, a început să publice la Cryptome diverse documente mai puţin accesibile publicului, cu un deceniu înaintea lui Wikileaks. 

Astfel, a intrat în conflict cu Microsoft după ce a publicat protocolul de colaborare cu autorităţile de pe plan mondial pentru investigarea online a suspecţilor, fără ca aceştia să fie notificaţi.

Cu toate acestea, Cryptome a menţinut un standard de responsabilitate, nepublicând documente care ar slăbi securitatea naţională a SUA, sau a altui stat NATO, precum Wikileaks.

Young a acceptat să colaboreze în urmă cu trei ani cu staff-ul de la Wikileaks, acceptând şi să fie interfaţa publică a organizaţiei. 

El explică în interviu cum a rupt colaborarea cu Wikileaks:

You had a falling-out with the other Wikileaks founders?
Young: Yes. But it was over this: someone said that the initial goal was $5 million. That caught my attention. One, because I think the type of stuff I was going to publish, you should never do it for money. Only because that contaminates the credibility and it turns it into a business opportunity where there's great treachery and lying going on.
And it will contaminate Wikileaks. It always does. In fact, that's the principal means by which noble endeavors are contaminated, the money trail. That's pretty obvious. I happen to think that amateur stuff is better than paid stuff.

How long were you involved before you resigned?
Young: Not long. A few weeks. It wasn't long. However, one of the things that happened is that somehow I got subscribed to that list under another nym and the messages kept coming in. I got to keep reading what they were saying about me after they booted me off. The messages kept coming in. So I published those too.

Did they criticize you for, well, leaking about Wikileaks?
Young: They certainly did. They accused me of being an old fart and jealous. And all these things that come up, that typically happen when someone doesn't like you. That's okay. I know you would never do that and journalists never do that, but ordinary people do this all the time.
