How Very Strange That…

How very strange that…

1. Germany wants the euro crisis resolved by closer integration – meaning more German control over the fiscal and monetary policies of the weak euro countries. They admit and then ignore the illegality of such a move without a new treaty, and effectively dare the German constitutional court to defy them. It won't.

German gold reserves are at record levels and their old Dmark coins and notes are still in store. All this is in defiance of the 1999 agreement that all euro members should pulp their respective currency notes and melt down their coinage when the euro was launched.

The emergency fund set up to help salvage the sinking euro-zone members – and to which the UK was obliged to contribute – still has no legality under the existing EU treaties. There appear to be no plans to correct the legal situation – a long-established Brussels tradition. ‘If the law doesn’t permit it, we’ll do it anyway since no-one can stop us!’

According to key figures in the international money markets, the European Central Bank is already insolvent. It ought to declare itself bankrupt, and the euro with it. Again, it won't.

2. The Home Secretary’s attempt to cap immigration was overturned by the courts because there had been no parliamentary scrutiny of the proposals. So why do the courts not overturn every EU regulation on the same grounds? None is ever scrutinised by parliament. The British parliament is not allowed to change so much as a comma. All are just nodded through.

3. An immigrant convicted of murder is allowed to remain in the UK after serving a long sentence, while our kith and kin in the Commonwealth are routinely refused all but visitors visas.

4. The UK government provides figures for net immigration and then claims the net inflow is going down. But that completely ignores the fact that the best people are leaving and their replacements are mostly economic migrants who bring little or nothing to the UK. The net effect of net immigration is disastrous. The UK government’s figures are totally misleading – which is presumably what they intend.

5. The Swedish extradition application against Julian Assange will be contested in the British courts, because he is an Australian and therefore not subject to EU extradition arrangements. Meanwhile British subjects are extradited to countries all over the EU without any British court even being allowed to hear the case against them, let alone decide on its merits.

6. Despite endless warnings, years ahead of the reality, we Brits only complain about EU interference in our lives when it is far too late.

The latest example is the banning of many herbal remedies which was agreed in Brussels years ago but came into force this month. Only now is the industry making a fuss – when it is far too late.

The impact of the Working Time Directive on trainee hospital doctors was another meddling EU interference scheduled long before being imposed. The medical profession was years too late kicking up a fuss.

(I well remember raising both threats at the time. Nobody in the UK wanted to know. The reaction I got would not have filled a pinhead.)

All of which is very strange…!
